SHAD Enters the Protection Market: New BMW R1300GS Crash Bars
For decades, SHAD has been the undisputed authority in aftermarket motorcycle luggage. Now, they are bringing that same world-class European engineering to an entirely new category: Motorcycle Protection.
To launch their new line of heavy-duty engine guards, SHAD has targeted the absolute pinnacle of the adventure segment: the BMW R1300GS (2023-onwards). Dropping a premium £16,000+ adventure bike off-road or even experiencing a slow-speed tip-over on a UK green lane can result in catastrophic repair bills. Proper drop protection is non-negotiable.
In this comprehensive guide, we break down SHAD’s brand-new crash bar ecosystem for the R1300GS, examine the technical specifications, detail exactly what is in the box, and provide step-by-step fitting instructions to get your boxer engine armoured up.
Engineering & Construction: Built to Take the Hit
Generic, thin-walled tubular steel won't cut it when protecting the exposed boxer cylinders of the 1300GS. SHAD has engineered these frame protectors from the ground up to match the thermal and mechanical demands of the bike, ensuring the impact force is dispersed before it reaches the chassis.
- Marine-Grade Material: Constructed entirely from AISI 304 Stainless Steel for maximum structural integrity and absolute corrosion resistance against UK road salt.
- Heavy-Duty Tubing: Featuring a robust 25mm outer diameter with a thick 2mm wall.
- Innovative Cushion Module: A standout feature on the lower engine guards. SHAD has integrated high-density nylon and silicone sliders at the primary contact points. In the event of a drop, these modules absorb the initial shock and provide a sliding surface, drastically reducing the kinetic energy transferred to the bike's frame.
- Two Premium Finishes: Available in Electropolished Silver (sandblasted and electrolytically treated) or Electrostatic Black (a heat-cured powder coat for maximum abrasion resistance).
The Ideal Accessory: SHAD TR08 Waterproof Engine Bar Bags
Before diving into the installation, it is worth noting why the upper tank guards are shaped the way they are. SHAD specifically designed the upper crash bars to accommodate their new soft luggage range.
If you need quick-access storage for a first aid kit, puncture repair tools, or a heavy disc lock, the SHAD TR08 Waterproof Engine Bar Bags are the perfect addition. These 100% waterproof, 3-litre roll-top bags mount securely onto the upper fairing guards using an ultra-tough UV-resistant strapping system. Keeping heavy tools mounted low and forward on the crash bars helps maintain the 1300GS's centre of gravity, freeing up space in your main panniers.
The R1300GS Protection Ecosystem: Lower vs. Upper
To ensure modular, comprehensive coverage, SHAD has split their protection into two distinct systems. ⚠️ CRITICAL FITMENT NOTE: The lower engine guards can be installed and used entirely on their own. However, if you want the upper fairing guards, you MUST install the lower guards first, as the upper bars physically anchor directly into the lower set.
1. Lower Engine Guards (Bash Bars) - Can be installed independently
Because of BMW’s iconic boxer engine configuration, the cylinders are the most vulnerable component in a crash. The SHAD lower crash bars are designed to act as a primary shield for your engine casings, oil sump, and exhaust headers.

What's in the Box?
- Left and Right AISI 304 Stainless Steel Lower Bars (with pre-installed Cushion Modules).
- Complete mounting hardware kit: 2x Ø20 Spacers, 3x Ø14 Spacers, Washers, and extended M8/M6 bolts.
- 1x Tube of medium-strength threadlocker (Screw Glue).
How to Fit the Lower Bars:
Installation is non-destructive, requiring no cutting or drilling to the chassis.
- Preparation: Working one side at a time, locate and remove the original factory engine mounting bolts as indicated in the manual.
- Alignment & Spacers: Position the SHAD lower bar against the chassis. Insert the provided aluminium spacers between the frame and the crash bar to ensure proper clearance over the exhaust headers.
- Hardware Installation: Apply a drop of the provided threadlocker (Screw Glue) to the threads of the new extended M8x40 and M6x30 bolts. Hand-thread them through the washers, bars, and spacers into the engine block.
- Final Torque: Crucial tip: Do not fully tighten the screws until both sides are perfectly aligned. Once aligned, torque to spec. SHAD recommends checking the tightness every 4 months.
2. Upper Fairing Guards (Tank Protectors) - Requires Lower Bars
While the lower bars protect the engine block, the upper crash bars wrap securely around the top half of the motorcycle to protect the radiators, plastic bodywork, and the fuel tank.

What's in the Box?
- Left and Right AISI 304 Stainless Steel Upper Bars.
- Upper beak fixing mount (brackets).
- Left and Right lower connecting joints (4L, 4R).
- Rubber dampening rings (to prevent metal-on-metal vibration).
- Complete mounting hardware kit (M8x20 bolts, washers, and nuts).
- 1x Tube of threadlocker (Screw Glue).
How to Fit the Upper Bars:
⚠️ Warning: You must have the lower SHAD engine guards already installed, as the upper bars anchor directly into them.
- Mount the Beak Bracket: Remove the factory bolts under the front beak of the GS. Install the provided SHAD upper fixing mount (Bracket A) using the existing mounting points.
- Connect the Upper Bars: Hang the left and right upper crash bars onto the newly installed central beak bracket. Do not fully tighten yet.
- Anchor to the Lower Bars: Slide the bottom legs of the upper bars into the corresponding joint sockets on the top of the lower engine guards. Ensure you use the provided rubber dampening rings inside the joint to eliminate vibration transfer.
- Clamp & Secure: Place the locking connectors (4L/4R) over the joints. Apply threadlocker to the M8x20 bolts and tighten everything down securely once you are happy with the alignment.
